artist statement
I am a descendant of the Blackfeet and Assiniboine tribe from my fathers side. My mother is from Mexico and she is Aztec. Ever since I was young I’ve always used Native American and Aztec folk lore in my art. The headdress is consistently appropriated by other cultures and felt that was and icon that could be understood across multiple cultures. When I looked up repatriation I realized one of the artifacts that were being given back to tribes was ANCESTRAL bones, hence the skull. One of my grandmothers died as well, so that was a personal easter egg for me. The hand is that of the action of repatriation, of being returned.
